Still want to talk about 'wtsgmi', i think the goodness in this show is it never try to 'shuo1 jiao4' (preaching), it just merely show you the truth how cruel this society is, throughout the show with the aid of miyuki's 'wu2 lai4' voice, audience can completely sense the 'zhen4 han4 li4' (impact? help to translate chaos, 10q).

actually if your tv set has the system, you would be able to adjust it so that you can watch the jap serial in jap and yet get to see the subtitles in english, at least it would be better than the vcds where most are in mandarin subtitles. on tv it would be clearer, but prob is that you have to wait a long time before you finish watching the show..:(

well, go try it. i saw some jap serials in jap with english subtitles. better than the dubbed version. most new tvs should have it. it is under the sounds adjustments. there are 3 choices. 1- whatever that tcs airs. 2 the original and 3 i'm not sure. haven't tried it. seemed like no diff from 1..
:D

Can anyone tell me where I can find the VCD for "Welcome Back Mr MacDonald"

I am still "living the heartbreak" (hee..hee) of not being able to grab tickets to the movie (it was completely sold out), I only watched Love Letter (quite nice though)

to lenlen,

thanks for having recommended 'shomu ni'. and indeed, i had to exercise extreme self-control to stop at the 5th episode last night at 4 a.m. (and can't wait to continue watching the next 1 or 2 episodes after logging out from here afterwards) :)

so far, besides the hilarious plots, i believe the main attraction of the show is the distinctive queerness of each of the characters. Every of the employees (from the shacho to the shomu ni ol) has some amusing and eccentric mannerisms that make me wonder how such company manages to function in the first place :) but really, even the 'villians' in the show (i.e. nonomura and his bucho of the personnel dept, and the secretary sugita) are so adorable. i can understand why u lost so much sleep watching this show :)

regarding 'wtsgmi' i agree that the show though 'shan4 qing2' and over-dramatized has never stooped to explicit preachings like some of the tcs dramas did. nojima, the writer of the show, has been well-known for such exposures of social injustices in every of his scripts. but so far, i think 'wtsgmi' has been his most extreme one.
p\s as for 'zhen han li', i'm not sure if the word 'impact' suits your context.

to funkie,

thanks for the reminder on the 'dual sound system' :) i did watch jap serials like 'under the same roof 2' using the 'japanese channel' but lost such luxury when watching the taped episodes, as my old vcr player doesn't support the 'dual sound'. but since the coming jap shows will be aired on thur nights, i should be around to watch them on tv most of the time, but as u and lenlen has mentioned, the wait for a whole week may be unbearable :)

to hobbes,

thanks a lot for the music title. it is featured in the 'long vacation' soundtrack? i should hunt for the album then. i have thought the piece is some classical piano sonata as the piano competition was on 'classical music' :)

to my melody,

if i'm not wrong, the url for the site is

http://members.tripod.com/asunaro/DORAMA/

and the show 'long vacation' though nice has never been an "exciting" show by the way. if u only like "exciting shows", then i'm afraid u will find it boring :)

seems like chaos has discovered my fave haunting place:) hey everyone,it's a great site so be sure to check it out!
the J-ent site is located at http://home.inreach.com/asunaro/index2.html

to melody: r u a fan of toshiaki karasawa(the hunk from tokyo cinderella story)? for your info, the lady in her 30s(tomoko yamaguchi)happens to be his real-life wife. they have been together for 7 years before they got married in 1997...not too sure about the date.. can anyone verify that?that's pretty long, huh?

to tv addict,
It's 1995 they got married after 8 years (after the 7 years of itch?).

to MM
If you find LV not interesting probably you didn't look into thier lines. At the beginning I also don't like tomoko (because she is karasawa's wife :), however you will find the chemistry between her and her opponent actorss/actresses, especially with kimura and inamori izumi (momoko, also the divorced woman in beach boys).

For myself, even if I set my tv speaker mute and cover the chinese subtitle, I can still find japanese series interesting, their fashionable outfits, beautiful scenery, very real prop sets, and ultimately thier pretty faces :)

Wonder where is BoBo? went holiday?

Anyone watch 'Lipstick'? I think Chaos might have watched, it was written by nojima again. But I guessed he might not like it, this show seemed to film from the angle of a woman's view. Man might find the show boring, enlighted me if I'm wrong, Chaos.

chaos

to lenlen,

bobo mentioned in the 100th message in 're: good japanese serials to recommend' that she will not be here for a fortnight (oversea holiday i guess). since the thread was deleted the next day, i think u might have missed it :)

i have not watched the show 'lipstick' personally, but my friend who watched it told me it is another show dabbling on 'taboo love relation'. this time between a girl in the girl's home and the instructor there i think. according to my friend, quite a touching show. but if u did not enjoy 'wtsgmi' that much, i think chances are u will not like 'lipstick' too.

i'm not too sure what is categorized as "filming from the angle of a woman's view", but so far, those shows which i've watched that seemingly do so (eg. 29th christmas, long vacation, shomu ni) are all quite interesting. i think whether a show is boring or not, hinges on the storyline and acting.

and talking about 'shomu ni' i've finished watching it. though the the underlying theme is as u said, feminist, i believe the show would be enjoyable to both genders as the issue of office politics is common to all. the show is particularly entertaining in its hilarious ways of poking fun at the hypocrisies in office politics. though exaggerating and comical, i believe those worked in offices before will readily associate the plots and characters in the show with their real-life colleagues and superiors :)

i find the story setup of 'shomu ni' rather similar to that of 'la belle equipe' and 'news no onna' where all these shows rely on independent storylines for every episode. each of the episode of these serials will build up a crisis which will be resolved at the end of that episode. advantages of it include the ability to maintain a constant pace throughout and enabling viewers to re-watch any of the episode anytime. but story progression will not be that coherent. in 'shomu ni' case, such discontinuties are also apparent. for instance, there is no further mentioning of the young son (hikaru) of the late kaicho, as well as the seemingly improved relations between esumi and the secretary. despite this 'picking of bones in an egg', 'shomu ni' is still a very entertaining show and has helped to laugh-off my stress :)

as for the relationship between toshiaki and tomoko, it is detailed in the autobiography written by toshiaki. i flipped through the chinese version at the takashimaya's kinokuniya and it seemed that they already knew each other well before both of them become famous. really quite a time-tested relation, it seems.

for male roles, so difficult, so limited.

lenlen, it seems that u had faced the same problems as me. there was once when my message was similarly rejected for "containing obscenities". after i went through painstaking 'fault-isolation' as u did, the problem word is "hitotsu yane no s*h*i*t*a (w/o the asterisks)"... :) what about u?

your 'tcs casting for shomu ni' is really quite promising, especially casting sharon au as 'rie'. maybe sharon would really outshine takahashi in this role :)
but for jacelyn, i don't think she would be as successful and convincing as esumi though she might have the build...

for the male casts, i'd suggest:

nonomura -- mark lee
nonomura's bucho -- chen shucheng
shomu ni's kacho -- huang wenyong

any more to add?

chaos

so lenlen, its the 'sh-i-ta' thing again :)

though the choice of casting may be available, if tcs is to film 'shomu ni' i don't think it would be able to do so with such style and mastery of the tbs crew, judging from its track records of silly and crude slapstick comedies like 'p.i. blues'...

btw, did u watch 'spiral' (the resurrection of sadako) on channel 8 last night? judging from its first episode, the show doesn't look very promising to me. the story build up was rather messy (hope the mess will be cleared by the subsequent episodes), and the acting crew was not very impressive either. even the male lead -- kitani goro, who had performed outstandingly in other blockbusters like 'tokyo cinderella', seemed lackluster and expressionless in 'spiral'. just hope the rest of the drama will prove me wrong.

i don't understand why tcs would want to choose 'spiral' to debut in the timeslot. its predecessor -- 'ring saishusho' by fuji last year, would be a better choice, imo. as i understand, this new show 'spiral' was based on the novel sequel to "the ring" and thus would be focusing on dna and cloning instead of the curse and stuff in the original story. such setting may be rather boring for a tv horror production...

chaos, did the band leader from Tokio act in 'ring saishusho'? no wonder i felt that the story was a bit different from the movie version, which was acted by nanako and the kakoii-looking hiroyuki sanada. however, 'ring 2' that was shown in the cinemas here was also slightly different from this TV version, right?
i was told that there r 2 versions of the sequel, one with fukada kyoko(the one seen in our local cinemas) and the other without(the spiral). this is all very confusing, especially to someone who cannot make head or tail of the story. however, i was very impressed by the build- up of suspense and the sound effects from the movie.
i felt that the tv production was quite nice although it didn't have a star-studded cast. i would have preferred more competent actors, but ultimately it is the plot that is more important in this case.
chaos, u r right about the dna and cloning in the sequel. i read from a ring website that the horror factor was cut down tremendously in part 2. in fact, those who have read the novel would realise that 'the ring' does not fall into the genre of horror stories. well, i guess i may have to read the book to find out.

chaos
User ID: 0916684 Dec 4th 1:20 AM

to tv addict,

sorry, i'm not familiar with the band 'tokio' and its members... :)

i think the movies and the dramas about "the ring" are a big mess. if u have read the original novel, u would realize none of them follow entirely according to the book. i'd try to outline the 'history' of "the ring" fever here...

a few years ago, suzuki koji the writer, first completed the novel "ring". two years later, he completed the sequel "rasen". then, came the first adptation of these two stories into films. the "ring" was filmed into a movie titled "the ring" starring nanako as asakawa the reporter (who in the novel is a male). this low-budget movie broke box office records in japan and throughout hk and taiwan (and created storms in s'pore subsequently). and the novel 'rasen' was thus filmed into another movie with the same title as the novel (though it was called 'ring 2' in hk). this film was never showed in s'pore though it followed very closely to the novel. the sequel that we saw in s'pore was not written by suzuki himself and so u can't find the story in any of the ring novels.

then last year, fuji tv filmed the first "ring" novel into a 12 episode serial entitled "ring - saishusho" (the last chapter of ring). the first half of the drama followed quite closely to the novel but the second half was the creation of the production crew which depicted the spread of the so-called 'ring' virus which threatens to wipe out the human race. this year, fuji tv again decided to film another 'ring'-related drama and call it 'rasen' or 'spiral' as it is known here (naming after the second 'ring' novel). however, from what i see, the first episode totally bears no similarity to the novel 'rasen' besides having the male lead calling 'ando'.

basically, the first ring novel was quite similar to the movie 'ring' we have seen here. and the second novel 'rasen' was as mentioned, capitalize on dna and cloning. it depicts how sadako was able to be resurrected through alteration of dna codes. it is imo, more like a science fiction with full of medical terms and methematical code breakings. the third novel 'the loop' was just released in japan last year. imo, it is still another science fiction, but this time the story is even more bold. though still full of medical and biological terms, the story takes on a different arena -- computer virtual reality. read it and u will find some similarities with the hollywood movie "13th floor" :) i think we may see a movie or a tv drama call "the loop" next year :)
